A Lifetime of Smiles Starts with a Good Foundation
Give your children a strong start by helping them build good oral hygiene habits and monitor their progress as they grow into their beautiful smiles. We understand the unique challenges and rewards of family care, and we know that kids need extra special attention. A healthy smile is an important part of childhood, so let’s set them on the right path with guidance tailored to their individual needs.
Getting Ready for Your First Appointment
Feel free to talk to your child about their upcoming trip to the dentist. The main goal of their first visit is to help them relax, have fun, and begin building a positive relationship with the dentist. It’s natural for children to feel a little nervous about the unknown, so here’s what they can expect during their first appointment:
Talk and Listen
We’ll take the time to talk to you and your child, explaining what we’re doing and why, while introducing your child to some of the tools we use. Using kid-friendly language, we’ll make sure they feel comfortable and reassured. See? We’re not so scary after all!
Gently Examine
We will gently examine your child’s gums, tongue, teeth, and overall oral health. This exam helps us identify any areas that may need extra attention at home. We’ll provide you with personalized guidance and make a note to focus on those areas during future visits.
Educate
We may ask your child to show us how they brush their teeth and offer gentle tips on improving their brushing habits at home. We’re happy to answer any questions you or your child may have about dental health and ensure everyone feels informed and confident.

Your consultation will include an examination of everything from your teeth, gums and soft tissues to the shape and condition of your bite. Generally, we want to see how your whole mouth looks and functions. Before we plan your treatment we want to know everything about the health and aesthetic of your smile, and, most importantly, what you want to achieve so we can help you get there.
Frequently Asked Questions
Children typically start cutting their first teeth around 6 months of age. It is recommended to bring your child to the dentist by age 1 or within 6 months of their first tooth appearing. If you notice any signs of discomfort or suspect something might be wrong, don’t hesitate to book an appointment as soon as possible. It’s never too late for your child to have their first dental visit.
Primary (baby) teeth are just as important as adult teeth. They do more than simply hold space for permanent teeth—they play a vital role in a child’s development. Healthy baby teeth affect how a child’s face looks, how they smile, and how often they smile. Children who grow up with the confidence to smile freely often carry that self-assurance into adulthood. Additionally, dental pain, even if mild and something children may learn to ignore, can negatively impact their eating habits. It can affect how they chew, what foods they prefer, and how much they eat, potentially leading to long-term issues.
The length of the appointment will depend on your child’s needs and how cooperative they are during the exam. On average, the appointment typically lasts about one hour.
After the first appointment, your child should visit the dentist as frequently as you do. We recommend a checkup and cleaning every 6 months, unless otherwise specified. If your child experiences tooth or jaw pain, frequently rubs or nurses their jaw, or avoids hard or cold foods, please schedule an appointment sooner.
Your mouth is more than just your teeth; it’s a complete system that includes your teeth, tongue, gums, cheeks, glands, ligaments, joints, and bone. When one part of your oral health is compromised, the entire system can be affected. Swollen, itchy, sore, or bleeding gums can be early signs of a more serious underlying issue that needs attention.
To improve your child’s gum health, ensure they brush their teeth twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste, floss regularly, and eat a balanced diet rich in vitamins and minerals. Encourage them to avoid sugary snacks and drinks, as these can lead to gum issues. Regular dental check-ups are essential for early detection and prevention of gum problems.
